- Six widely used apps, compared on what their own store listings and pages say: tracking, social features, offline use, wearables and whether they are free.
- All six are free to download on the Indian App Store; some have paid tiers, and Garmin Connect needs a Garmin device.
- We do not rank them. Pick by what you need: a social feed, guided coaching, a watch you already own, or trail maps.
There is no single best running app, because the apps do different jobs: some are social feeds, some are coaches, some belong to a watch brand, and some are really map tools. Below is a plain comparison of six apps Indian runners commonly use, based on what each company says on its own page or Indian App Store listing.
How we compared them
We read each app's own description, not reviews. Where a page did not say something (for example, whether an app works offline), we have written "not stated" instead of guessing. Features and paid tiers change often, so check the app before you commit.
Availability: we opened the listings on the Indian App Store for all six. We could not load the Google Play pages, so Android users should confirm on Play.

The comparison
| App | Cost to start | What it is built for | Social | Offline | Wearables |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strava | Free to download; free and subscription versions | Recording runs, rides, hikes and 50+ other activities; routes; training log | Activity feed, challenges, live location sharing, clubs | Routes can be saved for offline use (Strava's subscription page groups this with its paid features) | Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin and others |
| Nike Run Club | Listed as free | Tracking distance, GPS route, pace and heart rate; guided runs; training plans | Challenges with friends or the global community, live run sharing | Not stated | Apple Watch |
| adidas Running | Free to download; in-app purchases not named on the page we read | GPS tracking for running, walking, cycling and 90+ sports; training plans with voice coaching | Community challenges and virtual races | Not stated | Syncs with wearables (devices not named); Apple Watch support |
| ASICS Runkeeper | Free, with optional paid Runkeeper GO | Tracking, audio-guided workouts, goals and plans | Challenges, virtual running groups | Not stated | Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit and others |
| Garmin Connect | Free; needs a compatible Garmin device | Analysing activities from a Garmin watch; custom workouts | Leaderboard challenges, badges, groups | Not stated | Garmin devices; syncs with Apple Health, MyFitnessPal and Strava |
| komoot | Free to download; first region free; paid Premium and region packs | Route planning and navigation for hiking, cycling and running on trails | Shared tracks, following other users | Download maps for offline navigation | Apple Watch, Garmin, Wahoo |
What stands out for Indian runners
- Guided coaching may differ in India. Nike Run Club's listing says its training plans are available only in a list of countries that does not include India, and that guided runs are "available in select countries" without naming India. Tracking and challenges are separate from that.
- Paid tiers exist. Strava, Runkeeper (GO) and komoot all have paid options. Their Indian listings show rupee prices, but the listings do not always label the billing period, so read the checkout screen carefully.
- Your watch may decide for you. If you own a Garmin, Garmin Connect is already part of the package, and it can pass runs to Strava.
- Trail running needs maps. komoot's offline maps are the only offline map feature in this list that its listing describes in detail. For treks, see our guide to offline maps for treks in India.

Questions to ask before you install
- Do I need an app at all? A phone or watch that logs distance and time is enough for a first 5K. Add an app when you want a feed, a plan or a place to keep history.
- Will it drain my battery? Several listings (Strava, Nike Run Club, Garmin Connect, Runkeeper) warn that continuous GPS use in the background can reduce battery life, so charge before a long run.
- Who sees my runs? Social apps can show your location and routes. Check the privacy settings before your first run; our Strava alternatives guide explains Strava's visibility options.
- Will my data move if I switch? Some apps pass activities to others (Garmin Connect lists Strava sync), which makes it easier to change later.
Picking by need
- You want friends and a feed: Strava, or Nike Run Club's challenges.
- You want someone to tell you what to run: adidas Running or Runkeeper both mention training plans; check which plans are available to you in India.
- You already own a watch: start with the watch brand's own app, then add a social app if you want one.
- You run trails: komoot.
If you are just starting, a basic tracker is enough. Our 5K plan for beginners in India works with any of them, or with no app at all.
Where Treqz fits
Treqz Run is coming soon. It is not available to download yet, and we are not giving a launch date. The idea is to run your city, claim territory and join clubs; you can read the plan on the Run page, and what is territory running explains the concept. If you want people to run with right now, see run clubs and how to join one. Teams can also look at Crew, also coming soon.
