Strava alternatives for India: who each one suits

Looking beyond Strava? Compare Garmin Connect, Polar Flow, ASICS Runkeeper, Nike Run Club, adidas Running and komoot on privacy, cost, watches and clubs.

The 30-second answer
  • Strava has strong clubs and a big community, but if you want a free app, a watch-brand app or different social features, several others cover parts of the job.
  • No alternative copies Strava exactly. Many runners use their watch's app and share to Strava, or skip sharing entirely.
  • Strava lets you hide activities (Only You, Followers, Everyone), so privacy alone may not be a reason to leave.

If Strava does not fit, the best alternative depends on why: you may want a free app, an app tied to your watch, a simpler community, or better trail maps. This guide matches each reason to apps whose own pages describe the feature, and says plainly where a page does not.

First, what does Strava do?

Strava's Indian App Store listing describes recording runs, rides, hikes and more than 50 other sport types, an activity feed, monthly challenges, live location sharing, and syncing with Apple Watch, Fitbit and Garmin. It is free to download, with a paid subscription version. Its support pages describe clubs with weekly leaderboards, a recent-activity feed and member management by admins.

If privacy is your reason

Strava's support page explains three visibility settings for each activity:

You can set a default under Privacy Controls. The same page says activities set to Everyone or Followers contribute to Strava Metro and the Global Heatmap by default, and that you can opt out under "Product Improvement". If that is your worry, check those settings before switching apps. Garmin Connect and Polar Flow keep your data inside the watch-brand ecosystem, but we did not find privacy comparisons on their pages, so read each company's policy.

If cost is your reason

If your watch is the reason

Watch-brand apps are built around their own hardware. Garmin Connect needs a Garmin device and can sync with Strava. Polar says Flow works with all Polar watches, trackers and sensors since 2013. ASICS Runkeeper lists integration with Garmin, Fitbit and Apple Watch, and komoot lists Garmin and Wahoo. A simple route many runners take: record on the watch, read stats in its own app, and share to a social app only if they want to.

If clubs and groups are your reason

AppWhat its pages say about groups
StravaClubs with weekly leaderboards, a recent-activity feed and events or messages managed by admins
Garmin ConnectStep and distance challenges, groups, badges, leaderboards
ASICS RunkeeperIn-app challenges and virtual running groups
Nike Run ClubChallenges with friends, coworkers or the global community
adidas RunningCommunity challenges and virtual races

None of these pages say how well groups work for a real-world club in India. For in-person running, a city run club matters more than any app, and our guide on joining a run club is a good start.

If you run trails

komoot is built for route planning with turn-by-turn voice navigation and downloadable offline maps; its first region is free according to its Indian App Store listing. Strava also lists saving routes for offline use. If you head into the hills, read offline maps for treks in India.

Switching without losing your history

Before you leave an app, check how your runs can move. Garmin Connect's App Store listing says it syncs with Apple Health, MyFitnessPal and Strava, and Strava says it syncs with Apple Watch, Fitbit and Garmin, so a watch can feed several apps at once. We did not find an export guide on the pages we read, so check each app's help section for how to download your past activities.

One practical way to choose is to try the free option for two or three weeks. Run the same route, see which app you open without being reminded, and decide after that. Many people end up using two: one for recording and one for friends.

An honest note on Treqz Run

Treqz Run is coming soon and not available to download. It is planned as a different kind of app, with running your city, claiming turf and clubs, rather than a straight copy of Strava. Until it exists, use whichever app above fits you, and see the Run page or our wider app comparison. For the idea behind it, read what is territory running.

Quick questions

Is there a free alternative to Strava?

Nike Run Club is listed as free on the Indian App Store, and Garmin Connect and Polar Flow are free with their own devices. ASICS Runkeeper and adidas Running are free to download, with paid options.

Can I keep my runs private on Strava?

Yes. Strava lets you set an activity to Everyone, Followers or Only You. Only You keeps it off your profile, club feeds and leaderboards. Everyone and Followers activities feed Strava's Global Heatmap by default, and you can opt out in Privacy Controls.

Does Garmin Connect work without a Garmin watch?

No. Its App Store listing says you need a compatible Garmin device paired with your phone.

Is Treqz Run a Strava alternative?

It is meant to be something different, a game of running your city and claiming turf with clubs, and it is coming soon. It is not available yet, so it cannot replace anything today.
